Hip Pain Q & A

What causes hip pain?

Hip pain could be due to an injury such as a hip fracture or dislocation, or an acute soft tissue injury. However, more often than not, hip pain is caused by chronic conditions that develop slowly over time. The most common of these hip conditions include:

Bursitis

Bursitis affects the bursae in the hip joint, small sacs of liquid that protect the bones, tendons, and muscles from rubbing together. If the bursae themselves get rubbed, they can become inflamed and cause hip pain.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis is due to inflammation of the tendons, the connective tissues that attach muscles to bones.

Labral tear

Labral tears involve the labrum, a type of cartilage that protects and cushions your hip joint. The labrum helps to stop the ball at the top of your thigh bone from slipping out of the socket in your hip. Labral tears are often caused by repetitive strain, but can result from traumatic injury too.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a wear-and-tear disease of the joints in which the cartilage protecting the ends of the bones in the hip joint erodes. The exposed ends of the bones start to rub against each other, causing inflammation and hip pain.

How is hip pain diagnosed?

At your one-to-one consultation with Dr. Fedosseev, he carries out a thorough physical exam, looking at the degree of movement in your hips and how well you can walk.

Dr. Fedosseev goes through your medical history and current symptoms with you as well, and you may need to undergo diagnostic imaging tests like X-rays. These tests allow Dr. Fedosseev to see the internal structure of your hip joint in detail and assess the degree of tissue damage.

After making his diagnosis, Dr. Fedosseev designs a personalized treatment plan for you that uses physical therapies to optimize your recovery from hip pain.
